Ultrasound & Endometrial Assessment

Ultrasound-And-Endometrial-Assesment

Ultrasound and endometrial evaluation are fundamental components of female fertility assessment. These tests provide detailed information about ovarian reserve, follicular development, uterine structure, and endometrial receptivity. At Saga Clinic, we use high-resolution transvaginal ultrasound and advanced imaging techniques to diagnose conditions that may affect a woman’s ability to conceive.

A precise understanding of the uterus and endometrium is essential for planning natural conception, ovulation induction, IUI, and IVF cycles.

Transvaginal Ultrasound in Fertility Evaluation

Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) is the primary imaging tool used in gynecology and reproductive medicine. It offers real-time visualization of pelvic organs with excellent clarity.

What We Assess With Transvaginal Ultrasound

  • Ovarian size and morphology
  • Antral Follicle Count (AFC)
  • Follicular growth during ovulation
  • Presence of cysts, endometriomas, or polycystic ovaries
  • Uterine shape and structural abnormalities
  • Endometrial thickness and pattern

Endometrial Assessment

The endometrium (uterine lining) must be healthy, receptive, and properly synchronized with ovulation for successful implantation.
Endometrial evaluation helps identify causes of infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and implantation failure.

Key Parameters Assessed

1. Endometrial Thickness

Measured in millimeters; optimal thickness is essential for implantation.

2. Endometrial Pattern

A trilaminar (triple-line) pattern during the peri-ovulatory phase is a sign of good receptivity.

3. Blood Flow Evaluation (When Indicated)

Can provide information about endometrial perfusion and implantation potential.

When Is Endometrial Assessment Necessary?

We recommend endometrial evaluation for patients with:

  • Irregular or absent menstruation
  • Suspected endometrial pathology
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Thickened or thin endometrium
  • Abnormal bleeding patterns
  • Prior failed IVF attempts
  • Hormonal disorders (thyroid, PCOS, hyperprolactinemia)

Conditions Diagnosed Through Endometrial Evaluation

Endometrial Polyps

Benign overgrowths of the endometrium that may interfere with implantation.

Endometrial Hyperplasia

Thickening of the endometrial lining, often due to hormonal imbalance.

Uterine Fibroids

Intramural or submucosal fibroids may distort the cavity and affect fertility.

→ Read More --> Uterine Fibroids

Endometrial Adhesions (Asherman’s Syndrome)

Scar tissue inside the uterus may reduce fertility and cause irregular cycles.

Additional Diagnostic Tools

Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS)

Provides enhanced visualization of intrauterine abnormalities by filling the uterus with sterile saline.

Hysteroscopy

A direct visual examination of the uterine cavity using a thin camera.
Useful for diagnosing and treating:

  • Polyps
  • Submucosal fibroids
  • Adhesions
  • Anatomic abnormalities

Ultrasound in Assisted Reproductive Treatments

Ultrasound is essential throughout fertility treatment:

Follicular Monitoring

Tracks follicle growth during natural cycles, ovulation induction, IUI, and IVF.

Endometrial Tracking

Ensures that the lining is developing appropriately for embryo transfer.

Early Pregnancy Monitoring

Confirms gestational sac, fetal heartbeat, and normal progression.
