HPV in Men – Symptoms, Testing & Treatment

Hpv-In-Men

HPV is extremely common in men, and most carry the virus without any symptoms.
This makes men an important part of HPV transmission, even when they feel completely healthy.

At Saga Clinic, Dr. Eser Agar evaluates and treats HPV-related conditions in men, including genital warts, penile lesions, and HPV DNA testing when needed.

How HPV Appears in Men

While many men never show signs, HPV can cause:

  • Lythat (genital warts)
  • Penile skin lesions
  • Scrotal lesions
  • Anal/perianal warts
  • Throat (oropharyngeal) infection through oral sex
  • Anal HSIL (in high-risk individuals)

Warts in men are often:

  • Soft
  • Skin-colored
  • Cauliflower-shaped
  • Rapidly increasing

Even a single small lesion can indicate active HPV.

High-Risk HPV in Men

High-risk types in men can cause:

  • Penile intraepithelial neoplasia
  • Anal dysplasia
  • Oropharyngeal cancers
  • Persistent partner transmission

Men usually do not develop cervical-type disease, but they can carry and transmit high-risk types silently for years.

This is why couple-based HPV management is essential.

How HPV Testing Is Done in Men

Unlike women, there is no routine population screening for men.
Testing is recommended when:

  • Partner has HPV
  • Partner has genital warts
  • There are visible penile or anal lesions
  • There is persistent infection within the couple
  • Symptoms appear around the genital area
  • Unexplained itching or redness persists
  • Men who have sex with men (MSM), due to higher anal HPV risk

Testing Methods

  • Penile swab HPV DNA test
  • Anal canal swab (if indicated)
  • Throat/oropharyngeal swab (oral HPV risk)

The test detects:

  • Presence of HPV
  • Exact type (6/11/16/18 etc.)
  • Risk category (low/high)

Treatment Options for Male HPV

HPV itself cannot be “killed” with medication, but lesions and symptoms can be treated completely.

1. Laser Treatment

Most effective and precise.
Removes warts with minimal bleeding and very fast healing.

2. Radiofrequency

Useful for deeper or broad-based lesions.

3. Cauterization (Electrocautery)

Heat-based destruction of warts.

4. Topical Medications

Used selectively, but slower and less predictable than energy-based methods.

5. Anal Lesion Treatment

When needed, laser is recommended.

Prevention and Recurrence Control

To reduce reinfection and recurrence:

  • Treat all visible lesions
  • Boost immunity (no smoking, good sleep, low stress)
  • Avoid shaving infected areas
  • Use condoms (partial protection)
  • Vaccination as soon as possible
  • Partner testing when necessary
  • Avoiding alcohol and poor diet during healing

HPV can recur if immunity is low, so holistic management is essential.

Should Men Get the HPV Vaccine?

Yes — strongly recommended.

The HPV vaccine:

  • Prevents genital warts
  • Reduces transmission
  • Protects against penile, anal, and throat cancers
  • Decreases recurrence after treatment

Men benefit even if they already have HPV.
