Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine-Insemination-Iui

What Is IUI?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive fertility treatment where specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.
This reduces the distance sperm must travel and increases the chances of fertilization.

At Saga Clinic Tirana, Dr. Eser Agar designs carefully monitored IUI cycles to optimize success in couples who meet the criteria for this treatment.

Who Is IUI Suitable For?

IUI is ideal for couples with:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Mild male factor infertility (low motility or borderline count)
  • Ovulation disorders (PCOS, irregular cycles)
  • Cervical mucus problems
  • Sexual dysfunction or timing difficulties
  • Donor sperm cycles

IUI is often the first step before IVF for appropriate candidates.

How IUI Works at Saga Clinic

1. Cycle Monitoring

We track follicle development using:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound
  • Hormonal tests when necessary

This ensures ovulation occurs at the right time.

2. Ovulation Induction (If Needed)

Many IUI cycles use:

  • Letrozole
  • Clomiphene
  • Gonadotropins

to stimulate one or two follicles, improving pregnancy rates while minimizing risk of multiples.

3. Triggering Ovulation

When the leading follicle is mature, an hCG trigger shot is used to precisely time ovulation.

IUI is scheduled 24–36 hours afterward.

4. Sperm Preparation

On the day of the procedure:

  • A semen sample is collected
  • Sperm is washed and concentrated
  • Motile, healthy sperm are isolated

This preparation significantly improves the chances of fertilization.

5. The IUI Procedure

The procedure is:

  • Quick (5–10 minutes)
  • Painless or minimally uncomfortable
  • Performed with a thin catheter inserted into the uterus
  • No anesthesia required

This places the highest-quality sperm as close as possible to the egg.

6. After the Procedure

You can return to daily activities immediately.
Progesterone support may be recommended depending on your cycle.

A pregnancy test is performed 12–14 days after the IUI.

Success Rates

IUI success varies depending on age and underlying factors:

  • 10–20% per cycle for many couples
  • Higher when combined with ovulation induction
  • Works best when tubes are open and sperm parameters are appropriate

After 3–4 unsuccessful cycles, IVF may offer better results.

Risks of IUI

IUI is very safe.
Possible risks include:

  • Mild cramping
  • Spotting
  • Rare infection
  • Multiple pregnancy (especially with gonadotropins)

Monitoring helps minimize all risks.
