Gynecologist in Tirana - Annual Check-Up

Why Is It Important?
An annual gynecological check-up is one of the most effective ways to protect women’s health throughout life. It allows the early detection of silent or asymptomatic diseases, supports preventive medicine, and helps maintain reproductive and hormonal balance.
During this comprehensive evaluation, the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and vaginal health are assessed together with hormonal status. The exam also provides insight into fertility, sexual health, and menopause management.
Who Should Have It and How Often?
- Every sexually active woman: at least once a year.
- Postmenopausal women: regular monitoring for endometrial thickening, vaginal dryness, and urinary symptoms.
- High-risk women: those with a history of HPV infection, abnormal Pap smear, family history of gynecologic cancer, smoking, or immunosuppression — should have more frequent exams as recommended by their physician.
What Does the Examination Include?
- Medical History (Anamnesis): Detailed review of menstrual patterns, pregnancies, medications, family history, and current complaints.
- Physical and Gynecological Examination: Evaluation of vulva, vagina, and cervix; bimanual pelvic examination.
- Transvaginal Ultrasound: Assessment of uterine wall (endometrium), fibroids, polyps, cysts, and ovarian reserve.
- Pap Smear and HPV DNA Test: Cervical screening for cell changes and detection of high-risk HPV types.
- Infection Screening: If discharge or itching is present, vaginal pH, microscopy, and culture are performed.
- Hormonal and Additional Tests: For menstrual irregularities, infertility, or suspected thyroid or prolactin disorders.
Screening and Age-Based Principles
- Cervical cancer screening: Pap smear ± HPV DNA test according to international guidelines.
- Ultrasound: Performed based on age, symptoms, and risk profile — avoiding unnecessary imaging.
- Menopausal evaluation: In cases of abnormal bleeding, endometrial thickness is assessed and, if needed, office hysteroscopy or biopsy is performed.
How to Prepare for the Appointment
- For routine exams, choose a day when you are not menstruating (unless there is an urgent issue).
- Avoid vaginal douching, intercourse, or ovules 24–48 hours before the visit to ensure accurate sample results.
- Bring a list of your medications (especially hormones or anticoagulants) and mention any allergies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the examination painful?
Most procedures are quick and well-tolerated. Local anesthesia can be applied if needed.
Can Pap smear and HPV testing be done on the same day?
Yes. When indicated, both samples can be collected during the same appointment.
When will I receive the results?
Ultrasound findings are available immediately; laboratory results are usually reported within a few days.
