Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

Dilation-Curettage

Dilation & Curettage (D&C) is a widely used gynecologic procedure that allows both diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the uterine lining.
At Saga Clinic Tirana, Dr. Eser Agar performs D&C in a safe, controlled environment using modern surgical standards and individualized care.

What Is a D&C Procedure?

D&C involves two steps:

  1. Dilation – gently opening the cervix
  2. Curettage – removing or sampling the endometrial tissue inside the uterus

The procedure can be performed for medical evaluation, symptom relief, or removal of abnormal tissue.

When Is D&C Recommended?

D&C may be recommended for:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Thickened endometrium
  • Suspected endometrial hyperplasia
  • Removal of endometrial polyps
  • Persistent irregular bleeding
  • Post-menopausal bleeding
  • Incomplete miscarriage or retained tissue
  • Diagnostic evaluation before fertility treatment

Diagnostic vs. Therapeutic D&C

Diagnostic D&C

Used to obtain tissue samples for pathology.
Helpful for evaluating:

  • AUB causes
  • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • Precancerous or cancerous changes

Therapeutic D&C

Performed to remove unwanted or abnormal tissue.
Effective in:

  • Clearing retained pregnancy tissue
  • Treating heavy bleeding
  • Removing polyps or thickened lining

How the Procedure Is Performed

  • Procedure duration: 10–20 minutes
  • Performed under general anesthesia or sedation, depending on patient preference
  • Outpatient procedure — you can go home the same day
  • No incisions; all work is done through the cervix
  • Tissue is sent to pathology for examination when indicated

Recovery After D&C

Most patients recover quickly.
You may experience:

  • Mild cramping for 1–2 days
  • Light bleeding for a few days
  • Return to work the next day
  • Avoid intercourse, tampons, and vaginal products for 1 week

Full recovery is typically fast and uncomplicated.

Risks of D&C

D&C is a safe procedure, but rare risks include:

  • Infection
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Perforation (very rare)
  • Scar formation (Asherman’s syndrome – extremely uncommon with modern techniques)

Dr. Eser Agar uses gentle, controlled surgical methods to minimize all risks.
